Charges filed in Cahokia murder case

CAHOKIA, Ill. - The St. Clair County State's Attorney's Office charged a man for last week's murder of a 26-year-old Cahokia man.

According to Lt. George Mokriakow, deputy commander for the Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis, the murder occurred Thursday, February 6 around 9:25 p.m. in the 100 block of Amelia Drive. Deputies for the St. Clair County Sheriff's Department found the victim, identified as William Harriel Jr., lying in the roadway with a gunshot wound to the head. Harriel was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis was activated in response.

Investigators determined Harriel was a registered sex offender, but that fact is not a motive at this stage, Mokriakow said.

Authorities identified Harriel's roommate, 21-year-old Mohammed Abuharba, as a suspect. Abuharba was arrested and charged with murder/intent to kill or injure, and jailed on $5 million bond.
