Community wants peace after teen's murder

MADISON, Ill. – Community members are calling for peace after the murder of a teen at a Metro East market last week.

Sixteen-year-old Malik Garrett was shot outside Smiley's Market in Madison around 5:15 p.m. Friday. Police say he had been involved in a dispute with 17-year-old Craig Miller, who is accused of shooting and killing Garrett.

Church members from Madison, Venice, and Brooklyn gathered outside Smiley's Market to protest the violence.

"They just keep coming down here shooting at our kids. They can't walk nowhere without somebody following them, be outside at peace," said Annette Compton, a mom.

Miller is charged with two counts of first-degree murder and aggravated discharge of a firearm. He's held without bond.
