Customers attempt to stop armed robbery

MADISON COUNTY, Ill. – A Jerseyville, Ill. man is accused of robbing a Godfrey, Ill. business at gunpoint and throwing a woman to the floor.

Police say they were called to Mehlville Dairy in the 2900 block of Delmar Avenue around 8:40 a.m. Saturday. Deputies say a man wearing dark clothing and a face mask entered the store, got a fountain drink, and pulled out a handgun and pointed it at the cashier when he went to the checkout counter.

The clerk fell backwards as the man reached over the counter and stole cash from the register.

A 61-year-old female customer grabbed the man in an attempt to stop him, but he pushed her to the floor and left the store. The woman was not seriously injured.

The suspect jumped into a vehicle nearby, and customers chased him from the scene, obtaining his license plate number.

The man, identified as 35-year-old Joshua H. Davis, was taken into custody in Bellefontaine Neighbors, Mo. a short time later. He is charged with armed robbery and aggravated battery. His bond is set at $250,000.
