There have been a record number of heroin-related deaths in Madison County, Ill.
On Wednesday, the Madison County Coroner announced heroin claimed the lives of more than three dozen people in 2015.
There were 43 suspected heroin deaths in 2015 compared to 26 in 2014. The victims' ages range from 22 to 55-years-old.
Madison State's Attorney Tom Gibbons says the over prescription of pain killers is partially to blame for the spike in heroin use.
Gibbons and other local community leaders have spoke before thousands of students over the past two years about the dangers of heroin to try and put a stop to this deadly epidemic.
Drug related charges were also up by 77 percent in Madison County last year compared to 2014.
