Man arrested for attempted grocery store armed robbery

RICHWOODS, Mo. (KSDK) - A man is being treated at a St. Louis-area hospital after attempting to rob a Richwoods grocery store, the Washington County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday.

According to Sheriff Andy Skiles, the attempted robbery occurred at approximately 9 a.m. at Cobb's Grocery in 11200 block of Highway A.

Witnesses said the suspect walked in, brandished a can of mace and a large knife, and demanded money from the cash register. As the clerk behind the counter attempted to retrieve the money, another employee in the store grabbed a gun and fired one shot at the suspect while he was still in the store.

The suspect fled the store and drove off without getting any money.

Deputies located the vehicle later that morning and were able to take the suspect into custody.

Police have not said if the suspect was wounded or if his injuries were sustained during his arrest.
