Man charged for Florissant strip mall double murder

FLORISSANT, Mo. – A 21-year-old man is in police custody and charged for the murder of two people in the parking lot of a Florissant strip mall Wednesday afternoon.

Thomas Oates III is charged with two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of armed criminal action for the shooting deaths of 17-year-old Darrah Lane, and 27-year-old Leon Davis.

Officer Andy Haarmann with the Florissant Police Department says police responded to a report of a shooting in the parking lot in the 13000 block of New Halls Ferry Road at 5:12 p.m. Lane and Davis were found deceased inside of a vehicle. They had each suffered one gunshot wound.

Haarmann says Oates was in the backseat of Lane's vehicle when he got into an argument with her and Davis. Oates is accused of pulling out a gun and shooting both victims.

Oates was taken into custody in the City of Jennings without incident and transferred to the Florissant Police Department. Haarman says Oates confessed to the murder after arriving.

Lane's mother says her daughter was a junior at the Mark Twain Support Center, was ambitious and friendly. She was going to go job corps in a few weeks to learn different trades that would someday help her build cars.

Few details were released on the other victim. Lane's mother says he was her daughter's boyfriend.

Police are still unclear on a motive for the shooting.
