Man charged for murder of motorcyclist

MADISON COUNTY, Ill. – A Pontoon Beach man is charged with first-degree murder for the shooting death of a Granite City man over the weekend.

Caleb Ryan Bailey, 23, is charged with three counts of first-degree murder. He's accused of killing 43-year-old Travis Mayes around 3:43 a.m. Sunday in the 4700 block of Nameoki Road in rural Granite City.

A deputy with the Madison County Sheriff's Office found Mayes lying on the road next to his motorcycle. He was pronounced dead at the scene. It initially appeared Mayes died in a crash, but authorities received a 911 call a few minutes later from a witness who said a motorcycle rider had been shot.

During an examination, it was discovered Mayes had suffered a bullet wound to his head.

Bailey was taken into custody later on Sunday at his home in Pontoon Beach. He remains in custody at the Madison County Jail. Bail is set at $2 million.
