Man charged for rolling gun battle through downtown STL

ST. LOUIS – A 23-year-old man is charged for a rolling gun battle in downtown St. Louis over the weekend.

Jarel Mays is charged with four counts of first-degree assault and four counts of armed criminal action.

Police responded to calls for shots fired near 18th and Market around 12:44 a.m. Sunday. While officers were at the scene they got another call for a shooting near N. 10th and Olive streets.

Witnesses told police the suspect started to follow a vehicle with three men and a woman inside as they left a gas station in the 1600 block of S. Jefferson and then fired shots at their vehicle.

A 23-year-old male was shot in his back. He was taken to an area hospital in stable condition. A 27-year-old male was shot in his side. He was taken to an area hospital in critical by stable condition. They were found in the 900 block of Olive.

A 21-year-old male and a 25-year-old female also in the vehicle were not injured in the shooting.

Mays is held on a $200,000 cash-only bond.
