Man charged in Jennings church theft

ST. LOUIS COUNTY – A St. Louis man has been charged for burglarizing a church and stealing more than $1,500 worth of electronics in Jennings.

Joseph Johnson III faces felony second-degree burglary and stealing over $500 from the Tabernacle of the Congregation of God in the 6600 block of West Florissant Avenue.

According to court records, Johnson broke into the church between 5 p.m. Tuesday and 5 a.m. Wednesday by prying open a door to the church and stole a number of electronics.

Police found him sweating and covered in drywall dust while carrying a bag holding a number of electronic items, including a laptop in an alley behind the building. Police also found a remote control connected to the stolen goods, according to police records.

Johnson is currently being held on $50,000 cash-only bond.
