Man facing charges for bi-state thefts

A 27-year-old man is in custody in Illinois, but is facing charges in Missouri. This mugshot is from a previous arrest.

A Metro East man is facing charges for stealing three ATVs in St. Charles County.

Joshua Elec Middleton, 27, of Millstadt, Illinois, is charged with second-degree burglary and receiving stolen property. Court documents say he first contacted his victim through Craigslist. The victim told police Middleton expressed interest in buying an ATV from him, but never showed up for a pre-arranged meeting in early September. Several days later, the victim reported three ATVs stolen from the detached garage on his property.

Court documents say the suspect shared pictures of the stolen ATVs on Facebook, in an attempt to sell the property. Investigators used clues from those pictures – including items in the background — to eventually track one of the stolen ATVs to Middleton’s grandmother’s house in O’Fallon, Missouri.

St. Clair County authorities arrested Middleton Tuesday, and searched the Millstadt home he shares with his father. Investigators were seen removing several tires and tools from the property.

According to court documents, Middleton was already on probation for nine counts of burglary in St. Charles.

The St. Clair County Sheriff’s department has not charged Middleton yet, but he is under investigation for several similar burglaries in that county. He remains in jail in Illinois, awaiting extradition to Missouri.
