Man sought by police taken into custody

ST. LOUIS - A man sought by the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department has been taken into custody.

Friday afternoon, Leah K. Freeman, a spokesperson for the department, released a photo of the man, saying he is wanted for second-degree assault that happened downtown Wednesday, Jan. 24.

On Friday evening, they announced he is 28-year-old Shawn Akery.

Akery was assigned to the St. Louis Community Release Center and on Wednesday he checked out and never returned.

Active warrants for parole violations are in effect for him out of Franklin County for attempted forcible rape, and in Warren County for first-degree robbery.

Police say he is a person of interest for a second-degree assault that happened Wednesday in the 200 block of N. 9th Street. A woman reported she had been grabbed and knocked to the ground by a man police believe is Akery.
