Man steals safe from Troy Buchanan High School

LINCOLN COUNTY, Mo. - A brazen burglar broke into a high school Monday night, ransacked several classrooms and got away with a safe. Deputies with the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office are investigating a burglary at Tory Buchanan High School in Troy, Mo.

Surveillance video captured a male suspect forcing his way into the boiler room on the west side of the school around 8:30 p.m. He then ransacked classrooms and the principal's office before finding a key box and a safe. He pushed the safe from the main office to the basement, and then out to the loading dock to his vehicle.

School officials say the safe may have had around $600 inside.

Investigators identified the man as 30-year-old Steven Ueltzen, of Moscow Mills, Mo., who was identified through community tips. Police say the suspect left the school driving a grey or white minivan that may be a Dodge Caravan.

His last known whereabouts was a Troy Super 8 Motel, where he checked out Tuesday at 10:40 a.m. under the name William Hopper.

The track at Troy Buchanan High School is popular after hours for exercise.

"It's calm and peaceful," said Randy Tiefenthaler, who often uses the high school track.

However, Monday night it was anything, but calm and peaceful around the school. Police want to talk to anyone walking the track at 8:30 p.m. Monday.

Kristine Krumwiede was exercising right before the burglary happened.

"I didn't see anything other than the normal people walking and jogging," she said. "You do fear what could happen, unfortunately troy has always been a small town and unfortunately you just have to be very careful these days."

"It's a pretty tight knit community out here and we get the name and face out here, I'm quite certain they will catch him pretty quick," said Tony Mooney, resident of Troy.

The surveillance video shows people walking around the school's track while the suspect was pulling on doors, attempting to gain access to the building. Anyone who was at the track Monday night between the hours of 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. is asked to call Det. Tom Jackson at 636-528-8546.

Ueltzen is described as being 5 feet, 9 inches tall, 225 ponds, short brown hair, green eyes with a sleeve tattoo on his left arm, a tattoo on his neck that says "Riley," and could be carrying a .22-caliber long gun and a .357-magnum handgun.

He has multiple warrants out from multiple agencies for unlawful use of a weapon, felony domestic assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

Surveillance video of the suspect can be viewed through the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office's Facebook page.
