Police: Man holds children captive after police chase

ST. LOUIS COUNTY (KSDK) – A 34-year-old man faces charges related to a flashing a gun, leading police on a chase and holding hostage two small children, including a 2-year-old.

Casey Mitchell Langhans faces child kidnapping, first-degree burglary, tampering with a car and resisting arrest charges, according to Festus police.

The incident began at a Steak N Shake Wednesday night with a report of a man displaying a weapon.

By the time officers arrived, the person had fled the scene but officers found the car on Veterans Boulevard and Collins Avenue.

When officers attempted to stop the person, the driver fled in the car, which had been stolen, and lead police on a chase until he crashed into a church at Harrison Lane and South Adams Street.

The person entered an apartment in the 500 block of Tymberwick and held a woman and her two children there.

Police evacuated the building and attempted to negotiate with the person. The person set the mom free but was not allowed to take her children. After 30 minutes of negotiating, the man released both children but would not leave the apartment.

He surrendered to officers after 30 more minutes.

Neither the mom nor the children suffered injuries.

Langhans remains jailed on $250,000 bond.
