'Stranger danger' report in Troy, Missouri a false alarm

TROY, Mo. - A report of an attempted child abduction in Troy, Missouri turned out to be a simple misunderstanding, the Troy Police Department said.

According to Detective Tony Stewart, a police spokesman, said the incident occurred Wednesday around 4:40 p.m. on Juanita Street. A vehicle pulled into a driveway and a passenger reportedly offered a young girl standing outside the home if she wanted any candy. The child's father walked outside just as the vehicle was pulling away.

An adult couple contacted police on Thursday morning after seeing a post about the incident on the department's Facebook page. The pair believed they were the individuals in question.

Stewart said detectives contacted both adults and determined there was no criminal intent involved.

The driver of the vehicle said he was trying to locate a friend's address and was just trying to use the driveway to turn around, which was on a dead end street. While the car was backing out, a male juvenile in the backseat opened the back door and offered the young girl some candy in an attempt at making a joke.

Police spoke with the juvenile and counseled him on his ill-advised behavior.
