CHAMBERS COUNTY, TEXAS - They loved him as if he were their child.
What the 14-year-old grandson of Sandra and Chester Bienek is accused of giving them in return is unconscionable.
Chambers County Sheriff’s Office detectives said the teen not only killed his grandparents in their sleep but then potentially went on to live with the bodies for days inside the waterfront home in Beach City.
According to investigators, the boy tried to impersonate his dead grandfather when his concerned principal began asking questions.
The principal from Barbers Hills Middle School South came to the home in the 11000 block of Cedar Gulley Road on Tuesday after the boy hadn’t shown up for school two consecutive days.
The eighth grader reportedly claimed that he was sick and that his grandparents were out shopping.
It all began to unravel when the principal called the home later to follow up.
“Student answered the phone at one point and tried to act as if he was the grandfather,” explained Sheriff Brian Hawthorne. “The principal knew it was the student. He continued to press the student...He came back on the phone crying and said grandma had blood on her.”
Authorities responded to a 911 call from the alert principal and found the two retirees still tucked in their bed.
Investigators said the two had each been shot once in the back of the head, and they think it happened sometime on Sunday night or early Monday morning.
It’s believed that their grandson used their .45 caliber handgun to carry out the killings. That weapon has not been located.
“This is tragic, extremely tragic. This has rocked this county and rocked this community,” Hawthorne said.
The Chambers County Sheriff’s Office said it had no record of any previous calls involving the teen and his grandparents.
Deputies told KHOU 11 News that the boy’s mother used to live at the home too but moved out.
“Parents can’t deal with their kids anymore because they don’t discipline them, and then when they can’t deal with them anymore, they push them off on their parents,” said neighbor Wendy Morrison.
The son of Sandra and Chester said his teen nephew is autistic. However, he did not want to talk about his nephew in detail beyond that.
He said his family was heartbroken beyond words.
Investigators said teen has not confessed. However, Sheriff Hawthorne said there is strong physical and circumstantial evidence connecting him to the murders.
A possible motive has not yet been revealed.
The 14-year-old faces two counts of capital murder. He’s being held in a juvenile detention center in Kountze awaiting a court appearance next week.
Authorities said it’s too early to tell if he could be charged as an adult.
