NORTH ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – A toddler is dead in north St. Louis County after police say he accidentally shot himself.

St. Louis County Police said 21-month-old Carter Epps picked up a loaded handgun, and was shot in the torso area. His mother took him to the emergency room at SSM Health St. Mary's Hospital. The child was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Because the hospital is located in Richmond Heights, police there were first notified of this case. Early in the investigation, information led them to the Hanley Hills community, and they contacted St. Louis County Police. The Crimes Against Persons Unit is now investigating.

Police say the shooting occurred at around 1 p.m. Tuesday in the 7700 block of Utica Drive in northern St. Louis County. Police say the shooting occurred at the child's grandmother's house.

Police surrounded several houses on the block with crime tape as they worked through the afternoon and early evening. Police made an arrest, but the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney's Office said there was insufficent evidence to charge anyone at this time. The St. Louis County Police Department will continue to investigate the incident.

This story will be updated when more information becomes available.
