West Belleville residents fed up with crime

BELLEVILLE, Ill. - Business owners are demanding that something be done about the crime at an apartment complex in West Belleville.

At least one business owner is ready to relocate following the shooting that happened at the property on Monday.

Police arrested the suspect they believe was involved in the shooting. The victim also survived. Angie Hutchison says she's done running her framing business on West Main Street after Monday's shooting behind the Oakglen Apartments.

Hutchison's business is located directly across the street from the apartment complex. Charles Stegmeyer's law office is right next to it. He worries about the large groups of people gathering near the apartments.

"We have zoning regulations, let's make sure they're living up to the zoning requirements," said Stegmeyer.

Monday's shooting victim ended up running to the house of a lifelong friend of Stegmeyer's to ask for help. Stegmeyer says enough is enough.

"Let's picture this, it's 1:20 in the afternoon, it's a beautiful day. He and his wife are home and there's a knock on the door and there's an individual profusely bleeding and asking for help," he said.

Community leaders will meet on Friday to discuss the crime at the property. The police chief is expected to be there. We were unable to reach the owner listed for the property.
