Demonstrators protest Permanent Road Fund Tax

SWANSEA, Ill. (KSDK) – Dozens hit the streets Saturday to speak out against road taxes.

Demonstrators gathered on the corner of North Illinois Street to take a stand against the Permanent Road Fund Tax.

Demonstrators say they're paying the tax even though the municipalities of Swansea, Fairview Heights and Shiloh do their own road maintenance.

They say the overlap creates a tax bonus for the township, which could be offset by simply reducing the tax levy.

The only person authorized to do that is the St. Clair Township's Commissioner, who says he won't budge.
