Drag racer will not go to jail for hit and run

St. Louis (KSDK) -- A man who drag raced on Laclede'sLandingand hit a flag girl will not spend any time behind bars.

William Sapp was sentenced Thursday morning to three years probation and ordered to pay $10,000 in restitution, according to the St. Louis Circuit Attorney's Office.

He pleaded guilty to second-degree assault and leaving the scene of the accident.

Investigators say Sapp was driving the Mitsubishi Eclipse that struck the 17-year-old woman who was serving as a flag girl to start the race in the 1400 block of Collins near Cass Avenue, just north of the Landing, in December 2010.

Witnesses said the impactthrew the girlinto the path of a Chevrolet pick-up which was pitted against the Mitsubishi in the illegal race.

Both driverswere accused of speeding away from the scene of the incident.

The flag girl was severely injured and had broken ribs and a brain injury, according to the circuit attorney's office.
