ST. LOUIS COUNTY (KSDK) - A 10-year veteran of Missouri State Highway Patrol is in serious condition after he was hit by an alleged drunk driver while trying to conduct a traffic stop Sunday morning on Interstate 55.
It happened at about 8:30 a.m. just north of the Reavis Barracks exit in south county. Police say the trooper was getting out of his patrol car when a vehicle headed southbound on I-55 hit the patrol car, which hit the trooper. Authorities say the driver -- identified as 43-year-old Michael Haley-- did stop and cooperated with the investigation. He was taken to a nearby hospital with moderate injuries, and has since been charged with two counts of second degree assault and driving while intoxicated.
The trooper has been identified as 32-year-old Jeremy Potocki, a married father of three. A spokesperson for Missouri State Highway Patrol says his injuries were moderate, and he is expected to make a full recovery.
The passenger of the car the trooper was trying to pull over was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, police say.
Two lanes of southbound I-55 were closed while the accident was under investigation.
