(CNN) - The former Rutgers University student jailed for using a webcam to spy on his gay roommate wants out of prison.

A court official says Dharun Ravi's attorney filed a notice last week to appeal his client's bias intimidation conviction.

Ravi's roommate, 18-year-old Tyler Clementi, killed himself by jumping off New York's George Washington Bridge into the Hudson River.

The suicide took place after Clementi learned Ravi recorded his intimate encounter with another man.

Ravi began serving his 30 day jail term on May 31st.
