Modesto, CA (CNN) - A former California teacher who left his wife and kids for one of his students appeared in court Tuesday.

James Hooker sat before a judge in Modesto with his 18-year-old girlfriend, Jordan Powers, by his side.

Hooker is facing charges involving another student who claims he sexually assaulted her 14 years go.

Tuesday, the judge agreed to a request by Hooker's attorney for more time to review evidence.

Hooker's next court date is July 17.
