St. Louis (KSDK) - The country's top education leader, Arne Duncan, will be inducted into the Academic All-American Hall of Fame Monday evening in downtown St. Louis.

Earlier Monday, Duncan visited Vashon High School where the federal government is spending nearly $1 million to boost academic achievement.

The question for Education Secretary Duncan was, is it working? Is the academic environment at one of the city's most troubled schools improving?

Duncan says Vashon is on the right track. He visited two summer school classrooms aimed at students who will be freshmen in the fall.

The district has received millions of dollars through a school improvement grant known as "SIG." The grant is in its second year.

Duncan also took time to shoot a few hoops with several Vashon Wolverine players.

Missouri Education Commissioner Chris Nicastro was also at Vashon on Monday. She said her office is not currently reconsidering the city district's status of "unaccredited," but said St. Louis is making progress in academics, attendance, and other areas.
