KSDK -- A concerned parent alerted administrators at Riverview Gardens High School in Bellefontaine Neighbors about a potentially dangerous situation.
Rhonda Key, the co-superintendent of the Riverview Gardens School District, said they received a phone call around 7:30 a.m. that there may be someone with a gun at the school. The school was placed on lockdown and lockers, classrooms and students were searched.
Dr. Robert Mitchell, the coordinator for Secondary Schools in the district, said the unloaded revolver was found in a 17-year-old boy's backpack. Bellefontaine Neighbors police took the student into custody and his parents were called. The student was also suspended.
Other students say they were unsure what was going on at first.
Key says there will be extra security at strategic places on campus Friday. And with the exception of football practice, all after-school activities have been cancelled.
