Extreme cold causes Americans to book warm vacations

We now know what many Americans have been doing while stuck inside away from the winter blast outside.

The online travel site, Travelzoo, says searches for warm weather destinations are off the charts.

"Southern California, we're seeing year over year search increases by more than 100 percent. Mexico, up 300 percent, and similar numbers are coming for searches in Hawaii and in Florida," said Gabe Saglie, senior editor with Travelzoo.

Because of the financial hangover of the holidays leisure travel typically drops off in January. But not this year and destinations appear hungry for the business.

"The heightened demand and interests in warmer weather travel I think is starting to generate some pretty good deals," said Saglie.

"For people that are looking for a warm weather getaway a lot of people are going to be looking at the Caribbean and Mexico," said Jeanenne Tornatore with travel web site Orbitz.com.

Those are two locations with lots of rooms likely to have a lot of vacancies even at all-inclusive resorts.

With winter this brutal so far travel sites and agencies across the country are reporting brisk business.
