Family hosts benefit for woman killed in fire

O'FALLON, Mo. (KSDK) – The family of a woman found dead in a fire earlier this month gathered on Sunday to honor her memory.

A large crowd turned out for a benefit in Lake St. Louis. They were all there to remember 45-year-old Leah Tarkington.

She leaves behind two kids – a 21-year-old daughter and 18-year-old son. A family spokesperson says the fire happened so suddenly that she didn't have any life insurance or arrangements in place.

Today's benefit served to raise money to give her a proper burial.

Tarkington died on Jan. 16. She was found inside a shed at her father's home – where she and her son had been living.

"She always put everybody before herself," Jared Tarkington said. "She never really took anything for granted, never held anything against anybody."

Authorities have no released what caused the fire or an official cause of death. The family has set up a fund for Leah's funeral. You can find that here:
