Google Glass brings story from the OR home

ST. LOUIS (KSDK) – Saving lives in seconds is something the specialists who deliver high risk babies do everyday. Kay Quinn will tell the story of how doctors at Mercy Children's Hospital saved a set of twins who happened to share a placenta on Thursday at 10 p.m.

The hospital and family gave NewsChannel 5 "unprecedented access" into the operating room during the procedure – which allowed us to fully document the work that these amazing doctors do on a daily basis, and what it means for families.

"They let us come in with three different types of cameras, and film the entire delivery from the minute Julie [the mother] was wheeled in, to the moment that one of her babies went into the neonatal intensive care unit," Quinn said.

It isn't just the unique access that made this story special. Kay Quinn became one of the first journalists to use Google Glass technology inside of an operating room . It's part of a NewsChannel 5 commitment to using the best technology to bring the story home.

"We had never used Google Glass in this way," Quinn said. "I had literally never seen it until I took it out of the box in the corner of the operating room."

Using this technology came with its own unique set of challenges…and rewards.

"After I got used to not standing in an awkward position because I thought I had to frame everything, once I positioned it correctly and felt like I had things framed right, I almost forgot it was on," Quinn said.

In addition to a regular television camera, Photojournalist Joe Young also used a GoPro to get unique shots and a firsthand look at the procedure.

"We were able to walk around and get some different angles with it, and also place it on the small bed that they used to wheel the neonatal on," Young said.
