5 on Your Side: Bed bug investigation

ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - NewsChannel 5 has new information on a 5 on Your Side investigation.

A St. Louis woman with a bed bug-infested apartment asked us to help after living with the bugs for more than a year.

Tina Wampler of the 4600 block of Morganford gave us a look inside her apartment. What we found might make your skin crawl. The blood-sucking bugs are everywhere and they've been biting Wampler and her granddaughter since July 2012.

Wampler says the entire complex is infested and believes the bugs came from a now vacant apartment down the hall from hers.

After our story aired Tuesday night, a city health inspector showed up to the property on Wednesday. He found a "pretty extreme" case of bedbugs and says it's the property owners' responsibility to take care of pests.

Eichelberger Property Management, the company that handles the building's maintenance, was given 14 days to handle the bed bug issue, but Wampler doubts that will help. She says she's complained to the company multiple times and they've refused to pay a professional to get rid of the bugs.

"I've been through three couches, five air mattresses and a regular bed," said Wampler. "I wrapped the newer bed in plastic and I've still got the problem."

The St. Louis City Health Department cited the building's previous owner in 2012, but we wanted to know why the new landlord hasn't ended the infestation. When we couldn't get all the answers from Eichelberger Property Management Company on Tuesday, we went back on Wednesday. We were told we'd get a call back from a manager named Zack, but so far that call hasn't come.

A Health Department spokesperson says if the problem isn't taken care of, the company will have to go to court.
