(WTVJ) -- This Brazilian Blowout product reads contains no formaldehyde. That claim will no longer be on the bottle.
One of the main ingredients is the liquid form of formaldehyde according to the FDA.
California's attorney general has accused the company of deceptive advertising.
"There are some chemicals that don't say formaldehyde per se, but once they're heated will convert into formaldehyde or release formaldehyde from them," said Dr. Janelle Vega Mayoral, a dermatologist.
In November, Brazilian Blowout sent a reply to the FDA stating only a trace amount of naturally occurring formaldehyde was released by their products.
Now the maker of these products has settled the lawsuit filed by the state of California.
The company has agreed to pay $600,000 in fines and penalties for failing to notify consumers and stylists that its products contain chemicals that may cause cancer.
Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen.
Salons will also be supplied with pamphlets that contain recommended safety precautions.
Dr. Janelle Vega Mayoral says stylists should take measures when using any keratin straightening products that contain or release formaldehyde.
