St. Louis County (KSDK) - More than 40 cases of a virus have turned up in the same place in the St. Louis area. It's an intestinal virus that can make most people very sick for a few days, but in some cases it can also kill.

The gastro intestinal virus is very contagious and can be a serious threat in places like daycares and nursing homes.

Last week many residents at Nazareth Living Center in south St. Louis County had the flu like symptoms. The CEO said other local nursing homes are dealing with similar situations.

St. Louis County Health officials said they are looking into the Nazareth Living Center outbreak and are waiting on the results of laboratory results.

County officials said Nazareth Living Center leaders are being cooperative and proactive to handle the virus outbreak. County leaders also said similar outbreaks are not uncommon, especially this time of year.

"The most universal of all things we keep emphasizing over and over again is there is no substitute for good hand washing and washing your hands thoroughly with soap and water and making sure those around you do the same thing," said Dr. Faisal Khan with the St. Louis County Health Department.
