Illinois House honors soldier killed at Fort Hood

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Lawmakers in the Illinois House have observed a moment of silence for a soldier from Illinois who died in last week's shootings at Fort Hood in Texas.

The Springfield bureau of Lee Enterprises reports that House members paused Monday to remember 37-year-old Sgt. Timothy Owens, who is a native of Effingham. State Rep. David Reis of Willow Hall said "thoughts and prayers" go out to Owens and his family. Reis said Owens "was trying to help people and it cost him his life."

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn previously ordered flags flown at half-staff to honor Owens.

Authorities have said three people were killed and 16 others wounded in the shooting spree before the suspect, Spc. Ivan Lopez, killed himself.
