Local legislator asks for Nicastro's resignation

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KSDK) – A local state senator will file a Senate Remonstrance Tuesday calling for Education Commissioner Chris Nicastro to resign.

"If I cannot rely on an administrator to follow proper protocols, it is impossible for me or any other elected official to adequately represent the taxpayers in our districts," Sen. Maria Chappelle-Nadal (D-University City) said in a news release.

The motion includes allegations that Nicastro attempted to grant a lucrative contract to CEE-Trust to develop an improvement plan for the Kansas City School District without looking for other options. Nicastro is also accused to changing the words in her department's Fiscal Note Estimate.

Meanwhile, Missouri Auditor Tom Schweich is considering whether to initiate an audit against Nicastro's Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. He's asking for documents related to a petition affecting teacher tenure and a state contract with a group that's supposed to recommend ways to improve unaccredited districts such as the Kansas City School system.
