ST. LOUIS - An infant and young toddler are fighting for their lives after a drive-by shooting in University City.
Police are searching for two cars involved in the shooting. They say people in both those vehicles fired shots at the victims' car Tuesday night. At least three people were hit. Two of them were under two years old.
Police say the shooting happened around 8 p.m., so many people in the neighborhood where in their homes at the time.
“All of the sudden I heard a bunch of gun shots just going off,” said one neighbor, Moses Osborne.
They are rare sounds for the neighborhood where it happened.
“I was really surprised. I was just really surprised to hear something like that happen so close to the house,” said another resident.
The first shots rang out near the intersection of Ferguson and Plymouth. Neighbors report hearing gunshots continuing south down the street. We’re told the ordeal ended about two blocks south of the initial gunshots.
“It kind of disturbed me because I was like what in the world just happened,” said Osborne.
By the time it was over, five people were hurt. The most seriously injured were a 9-month-old baby and 18-month-old child. The 9-month old was shot in the back, the 18-month-old was shot in the head. Another child and adult in the car suffered minor injuries. The fifth victim, an adult, was shot in the hand.
“It is just ridiculous,” said Phillip Pearson, who works at an auto repair shop at the intersection where the shooting started.
The shop has been at the corner for more than two decades, and hasn’t had many problems related to crime. So, employees say they don’t feel unsafe. But, Pearson says he does feel disgusted.
“There’s no humanity in people anymore,” said Pearson.
There's no word from police on possible suspects. The only description of the cars involved is that they are dark in color.
