5 on Your Side helps get stolen charity van back to owner

ST. LOUIS - A van full of donations for needy families is stolen. The vehicle turned up, but the woman who used it to carry out her good deeds couldn't get it back, until 5 on Your Side stepped in.

Opening a donated bag of white socks, Tina Ivory-Dixon gets excited because she sees all the feet they can cover.

"I'm told to do this. This is what I'm supposed to do. I am very grateful," she said.

Through sales at her boutique and donations, she gives clothes and toiletries to needy families. Her 1997 Chrysler van is her delivery truck.

"It's not a new, shiny van at all, but it was mine," she said.

But over the weekend, her security cameras show what looks like a couple of guys making the van their own for a while, breaking in, and driving off. Ivory-Dixon says the van was loaded.

"It was crates full of items for our fire victims," she said.

Montsho McNair and her five kids are those victims. Their East St. Louis house burned last week.

"I need everything. I'm starting over from scratch with nothing so everything would have been made useful," said McNair.

Police found the abandoned van, without the donations, on North 13th Street and it sits in a tow yard.

"It's gone to tow heaven," she said.

Where it looked like it might stay. Ivory-Dixon can't afford the tow fee to get it out or the repairs to the steering column the criminals made.

5 on Your Side's Mike Rush set up a meeting between Ivory-Dixon and Harold Sanford , the manager of Satisfied Towing.

Sanford told 5 on Your Side, "I'll let her have her car back free and a friend of mine is going to come over and give me a discount rate and I'm going to see if I can get her column fixed for her." He added, "Somebody need to help her get her back to where she's going."

The chief of police called 5 on Your Side's Mike Rush to say the city released the van for free and repairs could be complete by Tuesday night.
