Neighbors say Carondelet Boulevard feels like racetrack

ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - A major boulevard feels like a big racetrack to neighbors in a residential area. They said they're fed up with people using their boulevard like a highway. One neighbor said she can't get action. She called Five On Your Side.

"They just go, go, go," Barbara Brown said.

"People around here don't seem to get it. They're waiting for one of us to get killed until the car lands in our house," she said.

It was different when Brown moved into the neighborhood in 1957.

"Over the years it's gotten worse, since they remodeled Carondolet and turned it into NASCAR," she said.

We saw drivers having trouble getting in and out of their driveways.

Brown said teenagers are often drag racing on the boulevard at night and on weekends.

"I came home on a Sunday working nights. I had rocks all over the street because two kids were drag racing," she said.

"I called street division, I called the police department, traffic control at least once a month,"she said, adding that she wants to put in a stop sign.

Five on Your Side called Barbara's alderman Larry Arnowitz.

"We are in a the process of putting a counter out here," he said.

Arnowitz said the road became busier when the casino was built. Drivers use it as a shortcut.

He also said officers are writing lots of speeding tickets to slow people down.

He said the streets department will watch Carondolet for a week and let him know how many bad accidents happened there. They'll also give him recommendations to make the road safer.

None of it is fast enough for Brown. She wants somebody to hurry up and slow people down.
