A mother and her boyfriend are now facing charges after a 5-year-old was shot in St. Louis earlier this month.
It happened on September 10 in the 2800 block of Stoddard.
The boy was shot in the left side of the chest and was listed in stable condition. He was conscious and breathing when taken to the hospital.
The child's mother, Brittany Harris, and her boyfriend, Demetrius Dennis, originally said the boy was playing outside when they heard a gunshot and discovered he'd been shot.
During a police investigation, it was discovered the child had been shot inside the home, possibly by another child, aged 4.
Harris and Dennis have both been charged with endangering the welfare of a child after police say they kept the gun unlocked underneath a bed.
An investigation is ongoing.
The shooting comes on the heels of yet another shooting that happened earlier in the week. It claimed the life of a young man just up the block from where the 5-year-old was shot.
Shaun Hawkins, 26, was shot in the head outside this nearby apartment complex on Monday.
Many neighborhood residents we spoke to told Five On Your Side, in light of so much violence in the span of a week, they believe police need to step up their presence in this area.
"[The police] come when it's too late. It's over now. They're gone. You need to be around before it happens," said Leslie James, long time area resident.
There is a police station just three blocks from where this shooting happened.
