Blind Rockwood third grader competes in school spelling bee

ST. LOUIS COUNTY - Thursday morning, Richie Tienter, a third grader at Westridge Elementary, competed in the Rockwood Spelling Bee.

He qualified by winning his class spelling bee and went head-to-head with fellow classmates, fourth and fifth grade students. For Richie, this was a huge accomplishment because he is legally blind.

Last year, his mother started working with him on the Ramona Book Series, and he know has the entire collection in Braille.

From there, he continued to study for this contest in Braille. Richie said even though he enjoys spelling he thoroughly enjoys history, specifically the 1400s.

He was eliminated in the fourth round of the school spelling bee Thursday morning and plans to continue to keep working hard and compete again next year.
