Reverend Robert Carlson, Archbishop of St. Louis, celebrated the 2nd annual Blue Mass to honor emergency responders at the Cathedral Basilica, Sunday.
The mass, held on the 15th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on 9/11 that took the lives of almost 3,000 people, honored the hundreds of first responders who died that day.
The horrific events of that fateful day were not the impetus for the Blue Mass, which was originally held in September 1934.
However, deaths suffered that day by first responders for whom the Mass honors makes this particular Sunday doubly meaningful.
Hundreds of Catholics and dozens of first responders attended the Mass.
