Eureka volunteers give it their all to protect properties from flooding

Residents are hoping to keep their businesses dry.

EUREKA, Mo. (KSDK) - Volunteers are no longer needed in Eureka. Eureka police put out an urgent call for sandbagging help Sunday afternoon. St. Louis County Police are now asking everyone to stay out of the area so that first responders, business owners, and home owners have enough space to work.

Volunteers filled and dispersed around 200,000 sandbags, which are being used as a wall in an attempt to protect businesses and homes from water damage. On Central Ave. in Old Town Eureka, water was seeping through the wall Tuesday. All day, volunteers pumped the water back over to the other side of the wall.

"I go to the high school and there was no school for the past two days so I figured I'd come out and help," volunteer Mary Gassner said. "I thought I'd be pretty sore but I'm not. I think it's the excitement of trying to help that's keeping us all going."
