Former patient thanks doctors who saved her life, child's life

On Wednesday, May 31, former patient Sara Grabowski and her family will return to SSM Health St. Mary's Hospital to surprise and thank the nurses, physicians and staff who helped her through "one of the most difficult and stressful times" of her life.

ST. LOUIS - It was a sweet surprise for a group of local doctors and nurses Thursday with a simple 'thank you' from a former patient.

Sara Grabowski spent several weeks at SSM Health St. Mary's Hospital in Richmond Heights. She was diagnosed during pregnancy with a serious condition that put her and her baby's health at risk.

Grabowski eventually delivered her daughter, Harper. Both mom and baby are now healthy.

Thursday, the family stopped by for a party -- to thank the team that treated them.

"You may be thinking, 'Why is she thanking us for just doing our job?' And yes, you may have just done your job, but for me and my family, it was the way you did your job," said Grabowski. "That made you stand out above all the rest."

The same team of nurses was also recognized with a 'Daisey' award, an international award given to nurses who provide extraordinary compassionate and skillful care.
