Former UFC champion injured in train crash

He survived, but had to be airlifted to a Springfield, Illinois hospital.

RAYMOND, ILL. - Former UFC champion Matt Hughes was seriously injured Friday morning when the pickup truck he was driving was hit by a train.

It happened around 10:45 a.m. on Beelers Trail in Montgomery County.

According to the Illinois State Police, Hughes crossed the railroad tracks directly in front of an oncoming train, which crashed into the passenger side of his truck.

Hughes was airlifted to a Springfield hospital.

The ISP Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit is investigating the crash.

Hughes, 43, currently lives in Hillsboro, Illinois.
