Glen Carbon woman found dead outside possibly from cold

GLEN CARBON, Ill. (KSDK) – An elderly Glen Carbon woman may have died from last week's round of below freezing temperatures, according to Madison County Coroner Stephen Nonnis.

Police discovered Mary Kampwerth in her driveway Saturday in the 4500 block of State Route 159, according to Nonnis, and was declared dead later that morning. She was found fully clothed and appeared to be in a "frozen state."

According to evidence gathered at the scene, Kampwerth might have been outside in her driveway since Jan. 7.

Nonnis said that the location of her body could have made it hard for neighbors or passers-by to see her, especially if covered by snow.

The autopsy was found inconclusive and additional lab and toxicology studies are pending.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Weber & Rodney Funeral Home of Edwardsville, Ill.
