ST. LOUIS - Police and fire chiefs from the city and county gathered at St. Louis City Hall Friday morning as the Guns 'N Hoses Boxing Association presented a check for $292,000 to the BackStoppers organization, money raised during the group's 27th annual boxing event.
The November 27, 2013 Guns 'N Hoses event honored six emergency responders who lost their lives in the line of duty since 2012. Members of area fire and police departments were pitted against one another on a 15-bout card, which included three mixed martial arts (MMA) fights.
The proceeds of each event go to BackStoppers, a non-profit organization that assists families of first responders who die in the line of duty. Such support includes covering the cost of emergency expenses, and even paying bills, mortgages, debts, and college costs. Approximately $4.4 million has been raised for families since 1987.
More than 17,000 people were in attendance at Scottrade Center for last fall's event.
