Heat keeping horse carriages off streets

ST. LOUIS – Those hoping to ride in a horse-drawn carriage in downtown St. Louis might have to wait for a cooler day.

City of St. Louis Health Director Pam Walker put new rules in place banning horse carriages from the streets if the heat index goes higher than 100 degrees. Sunday, the high is expected to be 99 degrees with a heat index between 100 and 105.

Previously, the horse carriages became a point of contention after Walker saw a horse showing signs of heat exhaustion earlier this summer.

Mayor Francis Slay received a report last month but has not yet publicly responded to the report.

Saturday, many horses were found in their stables sheltered from the heat.
