Home visiting services funded in Mo. until March 2015

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - A program that helps families learn is going to stick around.

On Monday, Congress voted for $400 million in funding for the Maternal, Infant, Early Childhood Home Visiting program (MIECHV). A little over $1 million will go to Missouri to be redistributed to home service programs via school districts.

These programs allow parents to work with educators in their own homes. The goal is to improve prenatal/birth outcomes, child health and development, parenting practices, school readiness, and reduce child maltreatment and abuse.

Parents as Teachers, a nonprofit based in St. Louis, says this new funding allows the home visiting service programs to continue through March 2015.

Last year in Missouri, Parents as Teachers visited more than 70,000 children.
