IDOT sets record for amount of salt used

ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Ill. – Early Friday evening the Missouri and Illinois departments of transportation say they're working to make sure area roads are safe.

MoDOT says it has 212 salt trucks on the roads, and crews will stay out until 7 p.m. IDOT says they'll be fully staffed until 7 p.m. as well. The trucks are dropping salt just in places where it's needed.

This is just adding to the large amount of salt IDOT has already dropped this winter. So far they've used 58,000 tons of salt, a milestone for the department. That's almost double the salt used in a normal year.

Not to mention, we haven't even entered prime pothole season.

IDOT and MoDOT tell us they can't even start to guess what it's going to cost to fix all the roads, but they do know they're going to spend a lot of time fixing those holes.

In the Metro East, IDOT has spent $6.5 million so far this year on snow and ice removal.
