Illinois prepares for statewide tornado drill

ST. LOUIS (KSDK) - It is severe weather awareness week in Missouri and Illinois, and a time for all of us to make plans for how we would respond in the event of severe storms, especially tornadoes.

There will be a statewide tornado drill in Illinois at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Then Thursday, March 6 at 1:30 p.m., there will be a statewide tornado drill in Missouri.

All of us should think now about where the safest place to be is at work, school and home. This should be an area in a building with a secure foundation, away from windows and, preferably, below ground level.

In that place you should have a severe weather safety kit that includes batteries, a flashlight, radio (battery operated), blankets, shoes, cash, a first aid kit, any medication you might need, dry clothing, non-perishable food, water and something to protect your head.

Make sure you have a rendezvous point for after the storm and that everyone knows where that is so that when the storm is over you'll know who's where.

The fundamental question: Where would you go and who would be with you if the siren sounds for you.
