Belleville train derailment knocks out power to hundreds, closes roads

The derailment occurred overnight Wednesday.

A coal train derailed in Belleville, Illinois, Wednesday morning knocking out power to hundreds and closing several roads in the area.

According to Herb Simmons, a spokesperson for St. Clair County Emergency Management, around eight train cars derailed around 2 a.m. near the intersection of Frank Scott Parkway and Foley.

There are no reports of any injuries at this time.

Ameren Illinois crews are on scene. As of 8 p.m., there were just 5 homes without power.

Althoff High School has canceled classes due to the power outage.

The Belleville Fire Department says it could take 24 - 48 hours for crews to clear the track and remove the debris. Foley Drive will likely remain closed for another day or two.
