Crude oil leak prompts Illinois highway closure

PATOKA, Ill. (KSDK) - A crude oil leak prompted the closure of US 51 just north of Patoka, the Illinois Department of Transportation said Sunday.

Patoka is located between Vandalia and Centralia along Highway 51, and is about 70 miles east of St. Louis.

Marion County Sgt. Kevin Cripps said there was a breach in one of the lines at the Patoka Tank Farm Crude Oil Storage Facility, which stores oil for multiple agencies, including Marathon, Amoco, Exxon Mobile, and Plaines. The leak allowed crude oil to seep into the ground, which then surfaced at a roadside ditch off US 51.

According to Joseph Monroe, an IDOT spokesman, the closure is expected to remain in place until Monday, June 30. Commuters are encouraged to use Kinoka Road, I-57, IL 185 and US 40 as alternate routes.
