Fatal Edwardsville accident victim identified

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – One person died Monday morning in an Edwardsville accident.

Edwardsville police say 50-year-old Marilyn S. Clasen was driving a 2002 Chrysler minivan when it collided with a 2004 Ford Explorer in the first block of South Plum Street at 6:57 a.m. Clasen was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say Clasen was driving the van north on South Plum Street when the Explorer crossed into her path, striking her vehicle head-on. Clasen was wearing a seatbelt, and the airbags in her van did deploy.

The driver of the SUV, identified as 23-year-old Michael R. Heinemeier, suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken to an area hospital for treatment. Police say he had an outstanding arrest warrant in Madison County for battery. He will appear in court at a later date due to his hospitalization.

A third vehicle, identified as a 1998 Nissan Alero, was also involved in the crash. The driver and a juvenile occupant were not injured.

Illinois State Police conducted an accident reconstruction investigation at the scene. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
